Open To The Possibilities

letter O

Have you ever known someone who flat out refused to consider a different option or way to do something? Raising my hand here. How about you, ever dug your heels in and said, “no way,” and refused to consider a different idea? Again, my hand is raised.

The thing about being stubborn, hardheaded, and closed minded is it limits us. Oh sure, there are times when being stubborn, and refusing to give up or in is a benefit,  but not when it stops us from succeeding, or growing.

Being open-minded empowers us, it broadens our life experienced, we learn more, we see more opportunities. When we are open to possibilities, we add value to our lives, we try new activities.

A few years ago I was offered the opportunity to participate in a video challenge. Now, I love challenges and find they are a great way to learn and grow. However, this challenge involved doing a video every day.

Were they kidding? I tried to avoid having my picture taken every time I saw a camera out. Yet, the challenge required not only a picture of me, but a moving video. Yikes.

Not only that, the video needed to be posted to the Facebook page. Sure, it was a private group, which meant it wasn’t open to the public. Still, it was out there, online, where other people could see it. Not only that, it wouldn’t be good. I’d never done a video, of myself or anyone else.

I opened my mind up to the possibility of learning a new skill, developing more  confidence, and finding new friends and took the challenge.  I did learn a new skill, one I ma still improving on, and I learned about the equipment necessary for a video. My confidence did improve, a miniscule, but that’s progress. Yes, I made some new friends, people I am still in contact with today, five years later.

My confidence would still be at the bottom of the ditch, I wouldn’t have had the experience of meeting the wonderful people also involved in the challenge, and I did learn a little about doing videos. Keeping an open mind, opened up the possibilities. Plus, the resulting action is often enjoyable and who doesn’t like to have fun?

When was the last time you did something outside your comfort zone?

Do you consider yourself and open-minded person?
