As I mentioned in a previous blog, walking has become my exercise of choice. Most days I walk 2.5 miles, on a track. It’s boring. Oh sure, I get to watch the sun rise, beautiful.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And yes, I do have a walking partner most days. Still, to add some spice to the walk, why not “visit” some areas here. The plan is (there I go, trying to plan again) to post pictures and information about the town, community, or interesting landmark as, or after, I would reach them if I was truly walking toward a destination.

First up is Stuart. A small town now, community really, but at one time Stuart was the place to be, twoa bustling metropolis. First up is the hotel. Built in 1902 adjacent to the train depot.

Today the hotel serves at the town hall and is rented out for special gatherings, family reunions, weddings, anniversaries, etc.

 

Next to the hotel is a small park. Perfect for sitting and visiting with friends while children run and play.

 

 

Like many small towns and communities a memorial thanks the service men and women involved in conflicts from WWI to  the most recent.

 In addition, the Stuart memorial honors the Gold star mothers, mothers who had children who gave their all in service of the United States Armed Forces.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

While Stuart had and has many good upstanding citizens, people who promote the town and help in any way possible, people who signed on the line to offer their lives for their country, we have had a few less desirable people visit. To house those persons, a jail was built. Constructed in 1918, it’s clear it hasn’t been used in several years.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Stuart even has it’s own tag office.

Today, just as when the town was founded children are considered treasures and everyone watches out for them and does their best to keep the little ones safe.

Hope you enjoyed this little tour of Stuart one of many small communities dotting Oklahoma. They are especially prominent in the southeastern part of the state. Lucky for the residents they don’t have to walk everywhere or depend on horse and wagon or buggy since the large towns of Tulsa and Oklahoma City are about a two hour drive away. If we’d actually walked there from my home, at my slow rate, it would’ve taken us seven days.

Moving our Bodies Makes Travel More Accessible

It’s Movement Monday

At least that’s the original plan. To blog about moving our bodies, not our belongings.

One problem with this Pantzer planning, is she often goes off on tangents.  I joined the Ultimate Blog Challenge this month and they often offer suggestions for blog posts. The suggestions, which are great and I sometimes go with them, seldom coincide with my blogging agenda.

Today however, the ideas almost mesh. My current schedule (when I follow it) is to blog about moving our bodies, otherwise known as exercise. The UBC suggestion is to blog about travel. There are a myriad of ways to incorporate travel into a blog. I’m going to combine travel and getting our bodies in motion.

Traveling to other places means we need to be in decent shape to fully enjoy the experience. A couple of years ago my family and I went to Silver Dollar City in Branson. I felt confident I could enjoy the outing.

Oops, no. I started walking, but soon realized a scooter was necessary to avoid a trip to the hospital. Not a good way to have an enjoyable time, for me or my family. So, I used the scooter, but was mortified of its necessity. Not a cool scooter like this either, an “old people scooter.” There is nothing wrong with those scooters and rides. They allow people to do many things they would otherwise miss out on. However, I felt like I was too young, and should be too healthy to use one of those scooters from need. Time to move my body and get in healthy shape if I wanted enjoy more of the outings with my family.

 

Clear indication I needed to exercise and get in some sort of shape. Which I started doing.

I started walking. At first less than a quarter of a mile. Don’t even ask how long it took to walk that short distance. Now, after several months of walking, I’m up to 2 1/2 miles in an hour and fifteen minutes. Not lightening speed, but it is an improvement.

 

Since I have plans to do more traveling, having a fit and healthy body will allow me to enjoy the full experience of wherever I go.

Now I have walked a couple of 5Ks, but that’s another post.

Sunday Afternoon Tea – When Technology Tries to Bite

Original plan – do a Facebook live and post it here afterwards.

Reality – Video looks like television reception from the sixties. No snow, but blurry and every changing picture. If it doesn’t improve it’s coming down.

There’s a lesson there and they remind me of some old sayings:

There’s more than one way to skin a cat. 

I know, yuck. Right? Who wants to skin a cat. Of course, the sentiment is, there’s almost always another way. That was true in this instance. I couldn’t do the Facebook live with my phone, for some reason the internet kept stopping. Even when in the house next to the router. Will have to find the answer to that problem. In the meantime however, I figured out that a Facebook live could be done on my computer. Found another way to skin that cat.

If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.

How many times have we heard that saying? That’s what happened today. Tried the phone Facebook Live, which I’ve done in the past, three or four times and it kept freezing up. Tried it on the computer and it seemed to work, although it starts out a little (lot) pixelated. Next Sunday will try again. Try, try, again.

It’s not over until it’s over.

The saying used to be different. But it referred to a robust woman singing a final tune. I tried wording it a little nicer. The meaning is the same, don’t quit until the round is over. Even if I hadn’t been able to do the Facebook Live today, as long as I kept trying I would eventually get it figured out. So, whatever you’re working on, don’t quit too soon.

I’m sure there are other lessons in today’s attempt, but three’s enough for now. I am posting the video below in the event it clears up when you click on it.

A Weekly Recap and Look at Leisure Activities

Today is rest and relaxation day. A day to blog about leisure activities. According to my first post here, where I gave a list of what I would post each day. Ha! That sort of worked.

Before we get to leisure, I thought, why not recap the week that didn’t exactly go as scheduled. At least not on the blog.

Sunday – Should have been the Sunday Tea, where I posted the video I’d done for FB. Did a video, however, it didn’t get posted here. I posted a link to the video, I think. The actual video didn’t get posted. Instead the blog was about starting over, which is exactly what I’m doing. Maybe a video will appear tomorrow.

Monday – Is supposed to be about exercise and moving our bodies. Instead, I posted a picture of a wall and a ladder. Theoretically, the photo could have been encouragement to get out and move more. It wasn’t though.

Tuesday – Is supposed to be about travel. Specifically, right now traveling Oklahoma where I live. Instead that post was about getting past the walls we build up to stop us.

Wednesday – Writing Wednesday, prompts and encouragement to write your story,  your husband’s story, the story of the two of you, or all of them together. That day I got right and wrote about my husband’s passion, in addition to me and the kids.

Thursday – Quote day is scheduled. No quote, instead encouragement to give yourself some compliments.

Friday – Food. Nope. Instead a short post on favorite things.

One out of six isn’t bad. Not good, but at least one day followed the plan. The other posts were all good, they just didn’t follow the plan. Next up, leisure activities.

Weekends, some people look forward to them. They call Wednesday, “hump” day because they are past the middle, the hump and are heading fast to the weekend. For me, sometimes weekends are too busy.

For me, sometimes my weekends loom long. Staying busy during the week is no problem. However, especially in the beginning, by the weekend, most others are involved in other pursuits, and I am left to fill my days.

Currently, I’m spending my weekends going through stuff. An accumulation of things my husband and I gathered over the years. We had planned to sort through everything before we moved to this house, but he died first. When I moved I just boxed everything and said, “I’ll go through it when I unpack.”

Ha! Some boxes and tubes haven’t been unpacked. So, now I am sorting through and discarding items that no longer have any value to me or simply aren’t needed.

My weekends and “leisure” days are cleaning. How about you?

Give Yourself a Compliment

When was the last time you  complimented yourself? You compliment others don’t  you? Tell someone they look nice.  Someone has a good idea and you comment on it, or does something nice and you compliment them for their manners, both are a form of complimenting. But you? When was the last time you complimented you?

When did you last tell yourself you looked nice, hot even, in that favorite outfit? You prepare a meal for one, and enjoy it, did you compliment the chef? You get the bills all paid, on time or even early, did  you compliment yourself on a job well done? So many opportunities during the day to compliment ourselves and we let them slide by.

In fact, instead of complimenting we often put ourselves down. We don’t acknowledge how nice we look, just remind ourselves we’re too fat, too skinny, too tall, too short, too, too, too. When in fact, we look great.

Other opportunities often  also ignored. For today, whenever today is, how about making a pact to give yourself a compliment at least three times just because. Also, vow to give yourself a compliment every time you catch yourself being negative to you.

In case you need some help with compliments for you, here are a few that spell W-I-D-O-W

W – WISE

You didn’t get to the age you are without learning a few things. Wisdom you are willing to impart to others as well as knowledge you use each day. Knowledge that helps you complete your day and reach your goal. You are wise, acknowledge and embrace that aspect of you.

I – IMPRESSIVE

Are you aware how you impress others with your skills and talents? Do you garden, sew, paint, write, clean house, do floral arrangements, listen, babysit, take photos, care for dogs, visit shut-ins, volunteer? Whatever you do is impressive. Not only to those who watch and are in awe, but those who are affected by your talents. They enjoy the fruits of your labor. Compliment yourself of your impressiveness instead of finding fault with your endeavor.

D – Daring

 

 

Women in general are daring, not walk on an airplane daring. Although there have been women wing walkers, as well as women pursuing other bold feats. No, simpler actions can be just as daring. Walking into the boss’s office and asking for a raise is not for the weak. Pointing out an error on a bill takes courage. Stepping outside when all you want to do is crawl back in bed is daring. What daring action are  you taking today? Don’t forget to compliment yourself on following through.

 

 

 

 

O – Opinionated/Original

 

Yes we have opinions. From breast feeding in public to gun control, and everything in between, we have an opinion. We share our opinions in many ways, speaking out to family, friends, strangers, writing our views in letters to the editor, to our legislature, or in our journal.  We are also original, a one-of-a-kind work of art. No one sees anything quite like we do. Celebrate your originality and opinions.

W – WHIMSICAL

 

While we are serious wise women, with strong opinions, we are also whimsical. We build fairy gardens, and create wonderland yards for holidays. We color our hair green or purple. We wear our favorite jewelry while doing housework. When you find yourself being whimsical, congratulate and compliment yourself.

 

 

Giving yourself a compliment is good for your mental health. Try it.

Excuses Create Walls Between Us and Our Dreams

Yesterday’s post gave me fits. First the computer wouldn’t play nice and let me write in my word processor. Next the internet gave me fits. Then the WordPress site didn’t format correctly. It was a bad night. I’d spent the day out of town at a meeting and was tired.

Finally, I gave up and went to bed, I needed to be up at 5 this morning. Didn’t want to still be working on the blog post by then. Last night my feeling was disappointment, I wasn’t going to get a daily post up for October for the Ultimate blog Challenge.

This morning my frame of mind was improved. First, I remembered the posts could be two in one day if needed. Cool. Second, I had a picture ready to go, it posted and now the blog is up-to-date, just needing a post for today.  And here it is.

A post about the walls we build in our lives. Invisible walls separating us from each other. However, I’m not very political so this is about our individual walls, the walls we put up to separate us from our dreams and goals, and yes even people.

Sometimes our walls start out as a little pebble.

Often it’s the word “can’t”. I can’t do whatever it is I’m wanting to do. Most often in the company of other supporting rocks.

We have two options when the rocks hurt our feet.

1.) We can gather them, the reason and the supporting rocks. Those that give us an excuse or a reason not to do whatever it is we want to do, or think we would enjoy. I can’t do this (rock one) because of that (rock 2) and (additional rocks.) We keep adding until we’ve built a rock wall that seems insurmountable.

2.) We can step over or on the rocks and proceed toward our goal stacking the rocks together to create a marker. A sign that we came that way, and moved ahead.

If the wall is already built, then it’s time to build a ladder to climb over it. Ladders are built just like the wall, one step, one rung, one action, one success  at a time.

I finally gave up and went to bed. I built a wall that prevented me from posting on the blog and preventing me from having a post for every day in October. That’s the goal of the Ultimate Blog Challenge, to have 30-31 posts at the end of the month.

So today I built a ladder to climb the wall.

Rung two:  This blog is going to have a post for every day, even if they aren’t actually posted on the day.

Rung three: Wrote a post for today.

Rung four: Schedule today’s post for later this afternoon, even though I will be away from the computer.

Rung five, okay, there were only four rungs. This wall was relatively short. Still, it could have stopped my dream/goal of 31 posts in October. Instead, I am still on track.

Jicama and a Barbcue Place – Adventures in Food

Trying new foods is one of my “adventures.” Sometimes it’s food new to me, sometimes it’s a food prepared in a different way, or by someone who knows how to cook it, sometimes it’s a new eating establishment.

This month I have two food adventures to share. A new eating place, and a new food.

First up, Earl’s

Earl’s is a barbecue place in Edmond Oklahoma. I wish I’d thought to take pictures. It’s one of my cousin’s favorite places to eat and he treated me to lunch earlier this week when I had to be in the city.  The interior has a fifties vibe. The restrooms are labeled, Elvis (men’s) and Priscilla (women).  Inside the ladies room are large framed pictures of Elvis and Priscilla, one with them holding baby Lisa Marie.

The dining room has space between the tables so the guests aren’t crowded during the busy times, although we were lucky and were eating at an odd time, so the place wasn’t too busy. The tables are polished with just a little bit of texture remaining. Old license plates from around the country decorate the walls.

The food was good,  they didn’t skimp on the meat or the fries. Dessert was cobbler. I had blackberry, his mom had peach. They didn’t skimp on the servings there either. Mine might have been two servings somewhere else. No, I did not save part of it for later. Ate the whole thing then and there, and enjoyed it. I’m willing to go back next time he wants to go. I might even go by myself next time I’m in that part of the city.

Okra is a must

I first learned about Earls this summer with my cousins and I were traveling to California. We stopped at a barbecue place in New Mexico or Arizona and he was beyond upset that they didn’t serve okra.  I’m not sure New Mexico or Arizona knows about okra. Okra is served almost everywhere in Oklahoma and Texas, and I often order it, sometimes by itself.  I didn’t know okra was considered a staple side dish for barbecue. After all, I always have fries and or coleslaw. However, in his mind okra goes with barbecue, period. Which made it imperative for him that I eat at Earl’s so I could see how barbecue should be served.

It was a great day. Good food and good company.

A New Food

While I was in the city another friend asked me to pick up some   jicama. I thought she wanted it for her. But, since I won’t see her for almost two weeks, and we weren’t sure how long Jicama would last, it turned out it is for me. I hope I like it, I love saying the name “Hic a ma.” with a name that fun to say, it’s bound to taste good.

What is it?

According to the internet jicama is:  a Mexican yam bean or Mexican turnip. It is the edible tuberous root of a Mexican vine, jicama. According to the label on my purchase, and the nice man who helped me find it in the store, it is known as a Mexican potato.
